Start dreaming of summer now. Playbulb has a brand new smart light that lets you decorate your pool, pond or yard with multi-coloured light. It’s the newly launched Playbulb Solar.

Meet Playbulb Solar

Playbulb makes very easy to use smart lights like the original Playbulb light and speaker, the holiday String, kid’s Zoocoro or the Candle or Sphere.  The entire line runs off a simple smartphone app that’s easy to navigate, intuitive and responsive.

Now Playbulb has launched a new outdoor light that’s wireless, solar powered and water resistant, called Solar. (Like the String, this light is premiering on Kickstarter where backers will get a shot at getting a good deal on the new light before it arrives in stores. Click the link above to read more about the campaign.)

Solar is made to float on water, so you can use it in ponds, birdbaths, kiddie pools or swimming pools. It has an IP68 rating which means it’s protected against water getting in even if it’s submerged in up to 1.5 metres of water for up to 30 minutes, plus it’s dust and dirt resistant. That makes it a wee bit different from Playbulb’s Garden  which is IP65 rated.

Put Playbulb Solar in your hot tub!

I was excited to use it in my hot tub, but I checked with MiPow/Playbulb first. The company says the light has only been tested in temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius, but considering my tub’s temperature hovers around 37C, things should be just fine.

Solar battery & smart light sensor

Playbulb says the solar battery will provide up to 25 hours of light on a charge. It’s supposed to turn on automatically when it gets dark, and off when it gets light thanks to a built-in Smart Light Sensor.

Use it in water or garden

The Solar light is made for water use, but it can also be staked into your garden or near your walkway with the included ‘mono pods’. When used in the water, Playbulb recommends it not be used with powerful water streams like a tap, ocean waves, or waterfalls. The colour and brightness of the light can be controlled with the free Playbulb app.

Check out Playbulb Solar light on Kickstarter — it’s now sold out, but it should be in stores too later in the year.
