Wacaco Miniprresso NS2 review: sitting on a deck.High quality, fresh espresso… anywhere? When you’re camping, hiking or traveling—or reveling in a relaxing morning coffee after a night in New Orleans…, keeping your gear light and compact is key. But sometimes you just need the comforts of home. And wherever I am, I’m all about starting the day with a hot, fresh espresso. It’s been 7 years since I first reviewed the original Wacaco Nanopresso and after years of constant use, mine was on its last legs. So when I went looking for a replacement I was glad to see Wacaco has upgraded it’s device to one that’s even smaller, but still able to pull off high quality road coffee. Meet the Wacaco Minipresso NS 2.

Wacaco Minipresso NS2 full hands-on review

In this review I’m going to try one out for myself, I’ll take a look at what’s new, improve and different from the original. I’ll talk about how exactly you use this device and what it can and can’t do. I’ll wrap things up with the pros and the cons and let you know if I think this new machine is worth it for you.

Wacaco Minipresso NS2

Summary

Overall I feel like this new version is a significant improvement over the original.   Wacaco Minipresso NS2 is your new travel bestie. I can absolutely recommend it for you.

Pros

  • Super compact
  • All in one
  • Easy
  • Makes great coffee
  • Modular & fits together
  • Uses Nespresso pods
  • Makes great cvoffee
  • Mess-free
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Water tank only makes 1 shot
  • ONLY uses Nespresso pods
  • No double shot option

What is Wacaco Minipresso NS2?

Wacaco Minipresso is a small hand-held espresso press. It uses boiling water, and hand-pumped pressure to squeeze out a shot of espresso from its compact body (it weighs less than 300g and is about 5” long). This model I chose uses coffee capsules, AKA Nespresso pods, which means making your morning espresso is going to be even easier because the coffee is already ground, measured, and tamped in a sealed package. If you prefer to use your own ground coffee, there’s a different model you can choose instead.

Possibly worth underlining is that you need to boil the water somehow and pour it into the machine; this device does not heat the water for you.

What’s different from Nanopresso?

I’ll touch on what’s different between this new NS2 machine and my original Nanopresso. For starters the Nanopresso was sold as a single shot machine with additional add-on accessories that could allow you to use an espresso capsule, or to make double shots.

Wacaco Miniprresso NS2 review

Original version with adapters, left, and new version at right.

Having spent a good many years with my Nanopresso, there are a few significant differences I’ve noticed right away. For one, this machine is almost an inch shorter than the original. It also appears to be made of a slightly nicer plastic composite and it has a few higher end details that make it look a little more rugged and elegant.

NS2 is also built upside down from the original: in this new model the water goes in the top, while the coffee capsule is inserted into the bottom. I will get into how this works in just a sec…

Original Nanopresso is still available, but between the NS2, and the Minipresso line, there appear to be multiple options and many improvements.

Unboxing Minipresso NS2

Wacaco Miniprresso NS2 review with all parts laid out.The Minipresso consists of several parts, which you’ll see the first time you unpack it. Some of them may be a bit mystifying:

  • The press body
  • The plastic drinking cup
  • The filter head/portafilter
On top is a removeable lid and inside is:
  • A cleaning brush
  • Drip tray

How to use Minipresso

To use Minipresso, you’ll take everything apart and insert a basic Nespresso capsule into the bottom, narrow end in, and then screw the top on.

You’ll need boiling water, so whether you start some in the microwave, get it from your water cooler-hot water tap, or put a kettle on, you’ll want to get that going.

Fill the reservoir on top with boiling water and twist the lid back on. At this point, twist the pump dial or piston so that it pops up from the body; this pump will be how you create the pressure inside the device.

Press the pump; it will take about xx squeezes until the pressure builds enough to pop the capsule, and you’ll hear that and then see the espresso flowing.
Keep pumping until no more liquid comes out.

What’s the pressure like on Minipresso NS2? Crema quality?

I was suitably impressed with the espresso and crema quality on the Minipresso. It seems like the machine puts out enough pressure to make a good shot and a decent crema (the coffee foam formed during extraction). Wacaco says, the pumping system reaches 18 bars o during extraction, which is comparable to what you might expect from the commercial espresso machine at your local cafe. I’ll note that is the same pressure as the original Nanopresso.

Coffee quality

Wacaco Miniprresso NS2 review making espresso shot.Overall I found I got a pretty good shot using the Minipresso. I’ve done plenty of reviews of Nespresso machines and I’ve become a convert to them thanks to their quick work and good quality fresh coffees.

While getting that ultimate thick and creamy espresso that comes from professional machines is hard, Nanopresso does a good job at giving you a very drinkable espresso. If you’re not a fan of coffee pods, you could certainly opt for the Minipresso version which allows you to use your own ground coffee.

Cleaning

The Minipresso is very easy to clean. Take it apart when it’s done and use the brush to remove any stray grounds from in and around the portafilter. Depending on how your feel about soap and coffee oil build up, either rinse it out and let it dry or use a bit of soap to scrub it clean. Wacaco does not say that any of the components are dishwasher safe.

Adaptations and modifications

Unlike original Nanopresso it doesn’t appear you can customize this machine so much. If you want to use ground coffee, or Keurig pods, you would need to purchase different variations of the Minipresso that are specific to those use cases. I also did not see that there is a double shot adapter for the NS2, which is a small disappointment.

Since I do like a double shot, I experimented with simply refilling the water tank after the first shot was extracted… and that’s an okay option in a pinch.

Using Minipresso

Wacaco Miniprresso NS2 review in camper van.I brought the Minipresso NS2 with me on a few trips; both camping and business travel, as well as a family birthday trip. This machine is so small it can literally fit into the tiniest backpack pockets and I only need to toss in a handful of Nespresso capsules to ensure I am ready to make my coffee. And let’s just say that my family found a quick espresso was just the thing after a night on the town in New Orleans…
I found for the most part getting boiling water is easy enough; either from a hotel coffee machine or kettle, or boiling some on the camp stove. So despite the fact there is no heating in this machine it’s not really a barrier to it use.

Overall review of Wacaco Minipresso

Overall I feel like this new version is a significant improvement over the original. Not only is it more compact, but the piston action is a lot smoother and easier to operate, and it seems like the water tank lid seals tighter and better. Let’s go over the pros and the cons.

Wacaco Miniprresso NS2 review On the pro side, I like the smaller size, lighter weight and increased portability of Minipresso NS2. Despite its multiple parts and accessories, it fits together easily the design is so clever. I love that this machine is specifically built to use Nespresso pods so that I don’t need to order extra adapters. I find the pressure it’s able to build up makes a thick and strong shot of espresso, and using these pods while travelling is extremely convenient and mess free.

So what are the downsides? So far I have to say this may be the perfect travel espresso machine. The only major complaint I could make is that I have to refill the water tank and re-run the water through a pod if I want a double shot. It would be great if there was a tank adapter.

In short, if you love your morning espresso as much as I do and you want a quick and tidy way to enjoy high-quality coffee on the go, the new Wacaco Minipresso NS2 is your new travel bestie. I can absolutely recommend it for you.

Minipresso NS2 sells for about $85CAD/ $60USD and you can get it from Wacaco’s website or get one fast from Amazon. The ground coffee version cost the same.

I get to review plenty of coffee gadgets and tech. You can check out… my review of the original Nanopresso device, the Handpresso plug-in portable espresso machine, or my favourite Nespresso machine, here.

Thermacell Patio Shield in a box on a table.

Mosquitos are a menace. And most of us would try anything to get some relief from the slapping and scratching. A popular gadget in the summer months is a portable mosquito repeller, like the Thermacell Patio Shield. But with no batteries, and twice as many components that need replacing, is the Thermacell Patio Shield you new outdoor bestie, or just a cash cow for Thermacell. And most importantly, does it actually work?

Thermacell Patio Shield
4.8

Summary

Overall, there’s definitely a customer for this product, and the fact that there are thousands of these sold every month underlines the fact it does have a place in the market. Even so it might not be the ideal solution for everyone.

Pros

  • Compact and lightweight
  • No batteries
  • No smoke or scent
  • Silent
  • It works

Cons

  • 2 sets of supplies
  • Cost of resupply
  • No off-brand supplies
  • No auto shut-off

In this hands-on review I’m going to try it out at my home to see what it’s like to use, what makes it different from other Thermacell devices, and how it works. I’ll tally up the pros and the cons and let you know if I think I can recommend this mosquito repelling device for you.

Two years ago, I reviewed the Thermacell Radius mosquito repeller and to my surprise, it worked as advertised! Radius is a battery powered, fully rechargeable and portable mosquito repeller that actually does the job. I was pretty pleased with it, despite the fact that you need to buy refill repellant cartridges to keep the mosquito shield up and running. Other than that, I had no other issues with the device. It only made sense for Thermacell to build on their success with even more mosquito repellers to pick from, all with rechargeable batteries.

Watch my full hands-on video review of Thermacell Patio Shield

Batteries NEVER included!

However, Thermacell sells some other products that don’t rely on batteries at all. The Patio Shield gets its power from something else…and to find out more about that, let’s look at what you get.

What’s in the Box?

In the package is the Thermacell Patio Shield itself, which is a cylindrical shaped plastic device that feels extremely lightweight. This version unlike many of Thermacell’s other products, comes in a bunch of different fun colours meant to complement your yard and garden decor. That’s one of the key differentiators from other products in the Thermacell lineup.

Also in the box you’ll find one small butane cartridge, and a trio of repellent mats. You don’t get any charging cable or dock because the Patio Shield fully relies on the fuel cartridge to heat up the repellent mat in order to disperse the repellant.

Yes, that’s twice the number of consumables and replaceables to worry about and seemingly a step backwards over Thermacell’s newer rechargeable mosquito repellers. But that’s where it gets its other differentiating factor from, and that’s that it requires no batteries whatsoever.

Thermacell Patio Shield on a table with all contents from the box.

Set up & assembly

When it comes to the set up and assembly, it’s quite straight forward: unwrap everything from the packaging, and remove the cap from the small butane cartridge. The cartridge screws in to the inside of the Patio Shield.

Then when you’re going to use it, you’ll want to unwrap one of the repellent mats. The mat just slides in under the plastic on top of the device. When it’s time to activate it, turn the dial along the base to the ‘On’ position for about 5 seconds, then twist it one step further to the ‘Start’ position and hold it for a few seconds to activate the butane. Once you can hear it running very faintly, you can move the dial back to the ‘On’ position and set it in the centre of your seating area.

There’s also a tiny window in the top side of the device that should begin to glow red when it is activated.

A final thing to consider is that it takes approximately 15 minutes for the device to spread enough repellent to create a mosquito free zone. That means turn it on about 15 minutes before you want to use it to get maximum coverage out of it. Also, Thermacell says the device can only be used outdoors.

How does it work?

The product name provides a clue on how the mosquito repellent works – “Therma” because each device generates heat to vaporize a liquid solution in a swappable cartridge or mat. That solution disperses into the air so that when mosquitoes encounter it they head in the other direction.

A note about Thermacell Lantern

I just want to take a quick moment here to call out the fact that there are a few different options from Thermacell that use similar technology to the Patio Shield. Some of them are different sizes and use cases, but they all have similar operation. You can get the Thermacell Patio Shield Lantern, which has an LED light inside for extra illumination.

The lantern does add the use of AA batteries, which are only used to power the light. The butane cell still fuels the repellant. There’s also the portable handheld Area Repellant which is simply a different design that makes it marginally easier to carry around, or to tuck into a backpack pocket.

Design

The design of the Thermacell Patio Shield is the second sign that this mosquito repeller has a very specific use case; meant to be highly portable, and since it’s only marginally larger than a soda can or a can of beans, you can really bring this anywhere outdoors you’re going to be.

The cylindrical design is still compact measuring 23.5 cm high and it’s quite light. The external body of the Thermacell Patio Shield safely protects the fuel cartridge while allowing it to heat up the repellent mat as usual without relying on electricity.

Erin's hand holding the Thermacell Patio Shield out in her yard.

Ideal for being off grid

That brings up another reason you might be interested in the Thermacell Patio Shield; if you will be camping off grid or somewhere without power. Because this device has no batteries and doesn’t require charging, it’s ideal for carrying when you don’t want to worry about finding juice.

Using the Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller

Most mosquito repeller devices work by heating up a mat made of allethrin to release the repellant into the air which wards off mosquitoes and pesky flies. But Thermacell’s technology doesn’t just revolve around the way the product heats up but also the composition of Thermacell’s repellent mats. Not only do these mats create a cone of inhospitability for mosquitos, but they also do this without noise, smoke or scent. This is a huge benefit for many people who would just like to enjoy a quiet smoke-free evening.

Plus, the product and its consumables are DEET-free.

Does it work?

You can probably just barely see the device working; it emits just the faintest wisps from the top of the unit.

I used the Patio Shield on several nights out in our backyard. It has been a cold and rainy spring here in Calgary this year and that’s led to a plethora of mosquitoes. The ideal placement is in the centre of the area where you’re sitting; on a table or otherwise nearby so that it can create that radius of protection.

I can confirm from my personal experience that it doesn’t smell at all, there’s no noticeable smoke or vapour unless you’re looking extremely closely, and it runs perfectly silently. It’s not going to compete with your music and certainly not going to be as jarring as one of those bug zapper devices.

Trying to measure mosquito concentrations in various positions in my yard would be an exercise in futility so I can only go on what my gut tells me with this device, (and what others who’ve been around the Patio Shield say). In short, it actually does feel like it’s working, and I felt like I was slapping mosquitoes a whole lot less or even not at all when I had one of these devices running nearby. It also had the bonus effect of keeping mosquitoes off the dogs too.

No Auto-shut off

I was not very happy with the fact that there is no auto shut off with this device. It’s far too easy to run through a full tank of butane if you don’t remember to turn it off. Which I’m sure Thermacell would like because then you need to buy more.

Working range & time

Thermacell says Patio Shield can repel mosquitoes up to 15 feet away. I found that was pretty accurate from my testing. It did seem after a while that the mosquitoes simply stopped approaching us. When I got up to go inside the house I would find they were hovering elsewhere in the yard.

Butane fuel refill with 3 replacement mats on a table.

Mat longevity

Thermacell says that each of the repellent mats should last up to four hours. While that doesn’t seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things, it’s likely enough for you to enjoy dinner and drinks in the backyard.

The mats will change colour from blue when they are brand new to white when they are exhausted. And as far as I can tell, if you don’t completely use up a mat in one sitting, as long as it looks like there is still some repellent in there, you should be able to continue using the same mat until it is depleted.

Butane fuel

All the mosquito-free fun goes away after you fully depleted the fuel cartridge which lasts about 12 hours or three consecutive repellent mats. So if you frequently hang out at your patio or other favorite outdoor spot, you better stock up on both butane and mats, and that’s the real downside of picking the Patio Shield over its rechargeable brethren.

Replacement cost

Sure, a replacement 12-hour bundle consisting of a cartridge and set of mats costs just $8.99 USD / $9.49 CAD, but they will add up if you start using the repellent daily or for longer stretches.

This means your total cost of ownership of the Thermacell Patio Shield will eventually exceed the higher price of the Thermacell rechargeable products and their cartridges.

Butane vs battery

While I will recommend most people buy the Thermacell rechargeable versions, those products aren’t exactly perfect especially if you talk about long-term usage. Batteries, even rechargeable ones, as convenient as they are, all have a limited lifespan. Every time you charge the product, the overall lifespan of the battery decreases a tiny bit and that’s a phenomenon all rechargeable products face.

Thermacell didn’t really take this into consideration as you cannot replace the batteries of any of their rechargeable products. Rechargeable products also add more points of failure. What if the battery connection to the product wears out or the charging port gets damaged? The Thermacell Patio Shield doesn’t have these failure points which is likely why Thermacell has them available.

Overall Thoughts: Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller

Thermacell Patio Shield sitting on a wooden table.

Overall, there’s definitely a customer for this product, and the fact that there are thousands of these sold every month underlines the fact it does have a place in the market. Even so it might not be the ideal solution for everyone. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons to see if it’s right for you.

On the pro side it is extremely compact and lightweight making it very portable, and doesn’t require batteries to operate. It operates without any smoke or scent, and doesn’t make any noise at all. And when it comes to whether or not it works, I feel like it does help keep mosquitoes at bay, and if it doesn’t eliminate them completely, it cuts way down on their concentration within a 15 foot radius.

What are the downsides? Definitely the fact you will need to restock two sets of supplies instead of just one, and that each one has a not insignificant cost that will eventually add up to more than you pay for the device.

The butane cartridges and the mats appear to be proprietary, so it’s not even as though you could find other cheaper or off-brand options. You may also struggle to even find replacements if you’re out camping in the backwoods. Also, most maddeningly, it does not turn off automatically. So if you happen to forget about it, as I did, you can easily exhaust an entire mat or tube of butane, without realizing it.

If you’d prefer to limit your spending to one set of refills, you can investigate a different option like the rechargeable Thermacell Radius, which uses small vials of liquid as the mosquito repellent. I’d definitely recommend Radius, but depending what your use case is, I do also find the Patio Shield does the job as well. For that reason I can definitely recommend it to you as long as you can see the refills treadmill you’re getting yourself onto.

Thermacell Patio Shield sells for about $26.99 USD / $36.99 CAD for the unit itself, while replacement 12-hour bundles with a cartridge and set of 3 mats costs about $8.99 USD / $9.49 CAD.

Govee Outdoor Triad Flood Lights box.

There are plenty of ways to jazz up your yard.. from plants and trees to questionable lawn decor. But I think one of the best and most versatile is sometimes the most overlooked… and that’s lighting. And when you can add Smart to the lighting so that your lights can change colours, and improve safety and security, all the better. Of the newest ones to cross my threshold is the Govee Triad Flood Light. In this review I will try the light out here in my yard. I’ll talk about the assembly and the set up and installation, brightness and special features, and I’ll wrap things up with the pros and the cons and let you know if I think I can recommend this large format outdoor light for you.

We are past the midway point of 2024 and AI overlords are taking over our tech from laptops, to smartphones, to wearables! One category that AI hasn’t quite dug their claws into yet is smart lights. But don’t be alarmed because innovation is alive and well in this sector with several brands offering all sorts of fancy ways to turn your household into real light shows. Govee is one of those big companies and they are back pushing the envelope in an area I didn’t expect—flood lights! The Govee Triad Flood Lights could be the next wild way to illuminate your home with the entire colour spectrum. Is this the winning design Govee needs or is it another rare miss?

Govee Triad Outdoor Flood Lights

Summary

Overall, I think this light is fantastic and it solves a lighting pain point for many people.

Pros

  • Large and powerful floodlight
  • Easy set-up and install
  • Fun preset lighting effects
  • Easy to schedule and personalize
  • Integrates with other smart home components

Cons

  • Need a tool to adjust the angle of the light

What is the Govee Triad Flood Light?

The Govee Outdoor Triad Flood Light is an AC-powered floodlight; and is a souped-up version of the original Govee RGBIC Flood Lights. The original Govee flood lights came in packs where you can get a bundle of two, four, or six lights and you can position them separately as long as you can connect them all to the control box. With the Govee Triad Flood lights, you get a triple light setup out of the box as a single unit. The unit features a big, bright flood light in the middle flanked by two identical flood lights attached by strong hinges.

What’s in the Box?

Contents of the Govee Triad Flood Lights laid out on a table.

Inside the box, you get the Govee Triad Flood Light unit itself along with a pair of stakes and hex key for adjustment. You also get a control box which you connect to the lights and a power adapter to connect the control box to a power source. Govee included both a quick start guide and user manual as well.

This light is probably bigger than you are expecting. It measures about 2 feet across and just under a foot tall with the stakes included. Based on size alone this should be a powerful light that can illuminate much larger areas than some other lighting options.

These flood lights are not your average lights you find in AliExpress or Temu; the Govee Outdoor Triad Flood Lights feel heavy and built like a tank. The body is made of aluminum and the hinges feel rock solid. To adjust the left and right light panels horizontally, you must loosen the hinge using the included hex key and retighten to lock them to your preferred position.

Set up & Installation

With the lights boasting IP66 weather resistance (-4°F to 113°F operating temperature range) and the control box having IP67 protection, you can confidently place these lights outdoors without worrying about any harsh elements. I am installing these during the summer season in Calgary, so while I won’t be able to evaluate yet what harsher winter weather and snow does to them, I will have to follow that up after a season or two.

Ground installation is easy as you don’t need any extra tools. Just insert the top screw part of the stake in one of the holes and position it to your liking. Then take the wind-up screw piece and tighten the screw to secure the stake in place. Repeat those steps with the other stake and push the unit firmly into the ground. If you don’t mind a bit of extra work, you can wall mount the lights as well.

Finally, adjust the side of the hinges to your desired angle. You can adjust the hinge in either direction up to 90 degrees. Then you have some limited adjustability for the side flood lights.

Next, it’s time to get them connected to your phone for remote control and the fun stuff.

App Features

If you have other Govee lights in your home, you don’t need to add an extra app because it uses the same Govee app as other lights. Setting up and pairing Govee lights to your phone takes a minute; just go into the app and choose to add a light, and your triad flood light should appear in the list. It takes just a couple of taps to connect it and then you’re ready to go, as I was during my installation.

Being in that Govee system has its advantages, especially if the Govee lights support DreamView. DreamView is a proprietary smart technology built into some products like the Govee Triad Flood Lights which can synchronize with other DreamView-supported lights so you can apply light mapping effects to multiple products all at once.

But even as a standalone product, the Govee Outdoor Triad Flood Lights offers plenty of flexibility.

You can adjust the colour settings of each individual light panel so you can create a cool, gradient-like rainbow effect when you spread out the side lights, or have every light show the same colour. If you don’t want to get fancy, it will simply use warmer or cooler white lights too, which are ideal for security purposes, and goes without saying the brightness is fully adjustable using the slider bar in the app.

The “Scene” selection of the app lets you choose over 40 lighting presets which apply to all three lights. You can configure the lights to respond to music using the Music Sync feature too if you’ve got a speaker in your yard.

Brightness and placement

Govee Outdoor Triad Flood Lights in the ground lit up blue, red and green.

Right out of the gate, these lights are surprisingly bright! With a 2,700 to 6,500K colour temperature range and 4,500 lumens, you can really fill a large area with light especially when you make those horizontal adjustments to the side lights.

The lights use the same premium RGBIC technology as other Govee lights so you can give them special effects.

You can control the lights via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Because Govee advertises them for outdoor use, the Govee Triad Flood Lights do not support the short-range 5 GHz band. But even at 2.4 GHz, you might need a wireless extender for your Wi-Fi network if you place the triad too far away from your router. The built-in Wi-Fi is quite primitive with only the 802.11n standard.

Depending on where you install them and how you aim the light, these can cover a very wide area and can be both extremely bright, making them ideal for security uses, or you can dim them down to provide more of a relaxed ambient glow. You can easily move the location of the light by simply pulling up the stakes and adjusting it, but I did find it a bit more annoying to have to go searching for the hex key anytime I wanted to adjust the angle of the light. I would love to see a better system such as some type of flexible locking mechanism so a tool is not always required to make changes.

Scheduling

Among the things I love about Govee lights is the ease of scheduling. I got these lights set up inside the app to come on automatically in the evening, and then to turn off in the morning. You can also adjust what colour the lights will stay, or simply make instant adjustments in the app.

Smart Home Integration

You can control the Govee Triad Flood Lights using Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant along with full automation support. I have made this light part of my Google home automation and they work just by calling out commands also. Govee even added Matter support which futureproofs the lights enabling better integration with other Matter smart home products that may lack other smart home protocols.

Overall Thoughts: Govee Triad Flood Light

Govee Outdoor Triad Flood Lights illuminating white in a dark yard.

Overall, I think this light is fantastic and it solves a lighting pain point for many people. Let’s go over the pros and cons.

On the pro side, you’re getting a large and powerful floodlight. It’s easy to set up and easy to install like all Govee lights. As an outdoor rated light it should be able to withstand all types of weather. It’s fun to play with the Govee preset lighting effect or to choose your own colours, and if you want something simply for security, it uses white light too. With an easy to use app for scheduling and personalization and the ability to integrate with all your other smart home components, this light is a fantastic choice.

So what are the downsides? I think the biggest detriment to this light is needing a tool to adjust the angle of the light. Too often the tools end up disappearing after you’ve installed it making it harder to make adjustments easily. I’d love to see this redesigned with a flexible mechanism that doesn’t require tools to adjust in the future. But otherwise if you are looking for a great outdoor light, make sure you add Govee Triad Outdoor Flood Light to your shortlist.

The price ranges from $129 US to $219 CAD and that’s another massive gulf in price from Yankee to Canuck.

Govee’s original flood lights still have value as you may be able to buy a 6-pack for a cheaper price which could be worthwhile if you really need to scatter the lights. But the Govee Triad Flood Light pushes the category forward and I can imagine other brands offering similar lights of their own.

Tentsile Stingraty tent.Didn’t we all want a tree house when we were kids? This is the adult version. Meet the gravity-defying Tentsile Stingray suspension tent. In this hands-on review, I’m taking it on the road to see what it’s like to set up, to sleep in, if it’s comfortable and what it’s designed for. I’ll wrap this up with the pros and cons and let you know if I can recommend this tent for you.

Tentsile Stingray Suspension Tent
4

Summary

On the Pro side, it’s fun, pretty easy to set up, and is supremely comfortable and can give you a great sleeping experience or just act as a campsite clubhouse. It’s weatherproof and can be warmed up with the addition of the quilt. It has doors in each side and the bottom for plenty of access options. It sleeps three people and can even handle your dogs too.

So what are the downsides? Perhaps the biggest barrier for folks could be that setting it up for the first time might be intimidating, but trust me when I say you’ll get used to it. The other thing is that it’s not ideal for backpacking, since the total weight is 24 pounds. Lastly, anytime someone in the tent rolls over everyone is going to feel it.

Pros

  • Easy to set up (once you know what to do)
  • Comfortable
  • Use as tent or hammock
  • Weatherproof
  • Great for rocky, uneven ground
  • Doors on each side, bottom
  • Sleeps 3
  • Pet-safe

What is a Tentsile Tent?

Tentsile kind of turned the camping game on its head for me when I first reviewed the Tentsile Connect a couple of years ago. Tentsile tents are designed to be suspended between trees, getting you off the cold, wet or rocky ground for a unique and more comfortable camping experience. This makes the tents ideal to bring along when you’re not sure if you’ll be able to find a flat, soft campsite.

The model I have is called the Stingray; it’s a triangular shaped tent with room for three people and their gear to sleep comfortably inside, each along one side of the tent. Amazingly it can hold up to 880 pounds or 440 KG!

Tentsile Stingraty tent. These tents sure look cool; you’re going to be getting lots of people stopping by your site to marvel at the engineering here. Speaking of which.. let’s get to how you set it up.
To understand how it’s set up let’s unpack the components. In the Tentsile duffel bag you get two sets of items; the tent components and the suspension gear. There’s the suspension tent itself which is pretty big at at about 13.3-feet/4m on each side , a rain fly and two tent poles. There’s also mesh gear lofts. Then the suspension components. There’s three rolls of thick orange strapping, three ratchets, blue felted tree protectors, and some plastic screw-pegs for pegging the fly. You also get a patch kit and extra pole segment.

The bag when fully packed isn’t light, weighing about 24 pounds.

How to set up Tentsile Stingray

The Stingray tent, like the Connect 2-person tent I reviewed a couple year back is easy to set up one you know what you’re doing, and is definitley possible for one person to tackle solo. With that said, it’s a bit weird the first time, so try to allow some extra time to understand it before you arrive at your campsite.

Tentsile Stingraty tent.First; unpack all your parts, and lay the Stingray out on the ground so you can place it in the right space. You will need three sturdy, older trees, that are equally spaced around the tent so the straps can connect evenly. The quick check here is if every corner points directly at a tree, you’re good. Otherwise, move the tent until you get good anchor points.

Tentsile Stingraty tent.Next wrap each of your webbed straps around the tree trunk; use the open loop and pull the end of the strap through and pull it to tighten. If you’re using trees with younger or more delicate bark, you can first pad them with your tree protectors. You’ll want to place the straps at the approximate height you’ll want them at, but you will have a change to adjust them a bit before you tighten everything.

Now, attach each of the ratchets to the corners of the tent; wrap the loop end through the large D-Rings on each corner and pull them tight.
Then it’s time to thread the strap into the ratchet. This might seem a bit tricky, but what you need to do is look for the slot in the narrow end of the ratchet and feed the strap through that slot, and pull it all the way through.

Next up you’re about to tighten the ratchets so now’s the time to make any height adjustments if you need to. Tentsile recommends you keep the tent at a manageable height off the ground, and unless you also bought thier add-on ladder. If it’s too high you’ll need some way to get in later.

To begin tightening the ratchets, hold the straps, and pull up on the release bar with your thumb. The release bar runs across the middle of the ratchet. This will allow you to open the ratchet.

Open it all the way up, then use the handle to ratchet it back and forth; it will begin to take up the slack in the straps. It’s a good idea to lightly tighten each strap, then come back around and do another firmer cinch.

Tentsile Stingraty tent. When everything is tight you have to lock the ratchets; don’t forget this step, since if you do, the tent will give out unexpectedly. Push the lever of the ratchet down until the lock bar is siting behind the stop.

Now it’s time to make your home… Extend the tent poles and push them through each of the two channels in the top of the tent. There’s small plastic cups at the end, so make sure they are sitting in there.

Tentsile Stingraty tent. Then inset the other end of the pole into the cups just outside the tent. Now you’ve got a 4-foot interior height tree house.

You can leave it as is, or add the rain fly. The fly slips over the top and clips onto the ratchets with small plastic clips.

Tentsile Stingraty tent. You can peg the fly into the ground, but I found the plastic screw pegs were ineffective in the rocky mountain soil I tried them in. Good thing, then I was able to use the hooks on the fly to secure it to the bottom of the Stingray.

Using Tentsile Stingray

One of the great things about this tent is there’s going to be no climbing over people while you sleep; there’s a large door in each side of the tent.

Tentsile Stingraty tent.To get in, the easiest way is to kind of sit on the edge of the door and then roll yourself in.
You can also use the central door in the floor to get in and out too, and if you need the ladder, this is where you’ll hang it.

The Stingray is also ideal if you have pets; our two dogs Kica and Rainie were so curious about the tent they couldn’t wait to get inside. They were pretty freaked out through by the moving floor, so the visit didn’t last long.

And you don’t need to worry about dog claws damaging the tent material; this tent is practically like kevlar, so I’m not worried at all about it. If you will have your dogs in here or you want to make the tent extra cozy, consider adding on the Tentsile Stingray Quilt; this perfectly fit quilted blanket covers the floor and secures with velcro. It’s a nice added bit of softness and insulation, and it even keeps the central floor door accessible.

Sleeping in Tentsile

Tentsile Stingraty tent.Sleeping in this tent is so comfortable. You have that relaxed hammock feeling, but without the cupping; the floor of the tent stays fairly flat too, so you’re not rolling into the other people.
The only thing I’d mention is any time someone turns over or gets up, you’re all going to feel it. Of course you can also just bring the Stingray along as a kind of hang-out hammock too.

Unique construction

Even on the rockiest terrain, sleeping on the Tentsile is going to be supremely comfortable. It relieves all pressure from your joints and muscles which ensures a good night’s sleep.
Tentsile tree tents are kind of like the hammocks, but with more room to spread out and without that “burrito” feeling you get from hammocks all thanks to three mounting points and a spine-like wide strap down the middle of the tent. You don’t feel this strap at all; it’s really just there to provide stability. That strap can be adjusted if over the years the material stretches out a bit, but Tentsile sends it perfectly calibrated from the factory so you shouldn’t need to touch it.

Unique camping experience

There’s something incredibly soothing about being cradled above the ground while the forest whispers lullabies. It’s also incredibly novel and exciting to set up camp in the trees. It brings a bit of that childhood treehouse magic back into camping. Plus, it makes for some stellar Instagram fodder!

Keeps those creepy crawlies away

Tentsile Stingraty tent.Forget about the hard, uneven, and sometimes soggy ground. Sleeping in a Tentsile tent is like being on a cloud (well, almost). You’re lifted away from ground moisture, creepy crawlies, and the cold earth, which can really up your camping game.

What’s new with Gen 3?

Tentsile has been around for a few years now and the company has continued to revise and refine their offerings. Now in its 3rd generation, there are a couple of updates worth noting.
Detachable underfloor storage nets: Nifty nets that hang under your tent, giving you a suspended “basement” if you will.

Upgraded rainflies: Now with a 5000HH rating, the rainflies can withstand significantly more resistant to rainfall while keeping its breathability.

Ground conversion kits: You can also set up Gen 3 Tentsiles on the ground, just like a traditional tent. This is especially useful when there are no sturdy trees around. This is great because flexibility is key in the wild. You can rock that aerial setup when the opportunity arises, and if not, no sweat—you can go traditional without missing a beat.

Tentsile Stingraty tent.Zippable internal storage pockets: To keep your gadgets safe and dry, they’ve also added internal storage pockets like in traditional tents.
Zero footprint, felt-tree protector wraps: The Leave No Trace principle is one of the key tenets to becoming a good outdoorsman. To help you become one, Tentsile includes tree protector wraps that spread out the load of the tent’s straps, reducing stress and pressure points on the tree bark. This is especially important when setting up camp in one location for several days, as concentrated pressure can lead to lasting damage.

So, Is the Tentsile Tree Tent Gen 3 Right for You?

If you’re after something a little different, value a unique sleeping setup, and don’t mind a bit of extra work setting up camp, then a Tentsile tent could be a fantastic addition to your outdoor gear. It’s not just about sleeping in a tent; it’s about creating memorable and surprisingly super comfortable outdoor adventures.

Plus these little improvements on the Gen 3 makes the Tentsile even more attractive. The ground conversion kit in particular, is a heaven-sent feature because sometimes, you just won’t find the right trees, spaced just right to pitch the Tentsile.

Just remember, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. But hey, if you’ve got a spirit of adventure and a love for the trees, sleeping suspended above the forest floor might just be your kind of paradise.

Overall review: Tentsile Stingray Tree tent

Overall I love this tent; Lets go over the pros and cons.

Even so, I think this tent is fantastic… and Kica does too. Rainie is a work in progress.

I can definitely recommend the Tentsile Stingray suspension tree tent for you.

If you need more lighting in your yard to keep a walkway illuminated, for better security and brightness, or just to have a little fun with your outdoor decor, a set of smart outdoor lights can be the answer. Govee recently launched a new version of its popular Outdoor Ground Light, and in my hands-on, at home review, I’m going to try them out and see for myself what’s new, how they work, if they’re an improvement over the originals and what you can do with them. I’ll wrap things up with the pros and the cons and let you know if I can recommend this outdoor lighting product for you.

Summary

The improved brightness levels, longer wiring, and enhanced illumination make the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2 truly worthy of the “2” moniker.

Pros

  • Easy to install
  • Fast app set-up
  • Very bright
  • Wider light
  • Colour and scene options
  • Longer length
  • Easily moveable

Cons

  • Too tall for mowing

What you get

Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2 are a set of corded, AC-powered colour changing flat LED lights that are designed to run along a pathway, driveway or to light up a border.
Govee is one of the more established brands of both indoor and outdoor smart lighting in recent years. We reviewed several of their products and while each of them had their share of flaws, Govee’s product ecosystem continues to expand and more importantly, Govee continues to update their app. Govee’s product lineup has gotten so big that the company is launching some direct sequels to some of their best-selling products like the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights. Meet the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2!

Improvements Over Gen 1

I owned a set of original Govee Outdoor Ground Lights and found them to be a great, easy to install set of lights that were a very bright addition to my otherwise dark yard. The original lights are smaller and flatter than the new version, but the overall concept is the same and Govee still sells the older version on Amazon for a lower price. Depending on your specific needs and budget, the older version might better fit the bill.

Watch my full hands-on review of Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2

Extended Lengths

Govee has increased the lengths of both the short and long variants of the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2. This is crucial if you want to cover longer paths because you cannot link two separate ground light chains together and share the same power source.

The updated set introduces a new 30-light version which measures 30 meters/98 feet long. This variant also comes with a splitter connector so you can use a single pack of lights to illuminate both sides of a short path. If you want to save and go for a shorter variant, Govee offers the 15-light version which is half the length or about 50-feet. (The older 15-light version maxes out at just 11 meters/36-feet and the 24-light version can stretch to just 15.2m/50-feet.)

Erin unwinding the Govee Ground Lights 2 light string.

Increased Brightness

Every individual light of the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2 can reach a max brightness of 100 lumens. That’s a nice 20 lumen increase over the older model. Reaching those higher brightness levels will consume more power, but since these are hardwired via a plug, that shouldn’t be an issue. And like other Govee products, you can fine tune the brightness via the app to suit the mood.

Improved Design

The Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2 features a new reflecting cup design which helps maximize the light directed around the light pod. This means the illumination of every light can still cover a broad area even at lower brightness levels. The spike of each light also has a longer length of 2.9 inches for a firmer installation.

What’s in the Box?

I opted for the 15-light set covering 50-feet. In the box you get the ground lights themselves and a set of 16 stakes (or 32 stakes depending on the length you buy. The splitter connector is exclusive for the longer 30-light model.) You also get a control box which serves as a bridge between the ground lights and power source.

Installation

Close up of a Govee Ground Light 2 stake.

The most challenging part of the installation is untangling the lights! They arrive tied with a Velcro wrap and you just need to undo them and lay them out. Each of the lights has a small clip style back and each of the stakes simply clicks into place, making it really easy to install. Push the stakes into the ground and then plug them in.

The first thing I noticed is how very bright they are even in the daylight. The additional brightness power in these lights is very obvious and means this should be a great addition to houses that are looking for a bit of extra lighting for safety along walkways or general security.

Easy operation with Govee app

Like other Govee products, I had no trouble setting up the Govee Ground Lights and getting them connected to my phone for wireless control and scheduling. You don’t have to purchase any separate hub or bridge as the lights can connect directly to your router. The Govee Home app takes care of the rest, and you can easily integrate it with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

I set up a simple schedule where the lights come on shortly before sunset and turn off automatically at sunrise. It’s so easy to do and means I have 24/7, 365 automatic lighting around my house. I can easily change the colours depending on the time of year or any holidays.

Govee’s app is the best in the business, and with it you can choose a single colour for all the lights in the string, or pick out individual colours to your liking. You can also use Govee fun lighting scenes which allows you to use automated colour and lighting effects too.

Govee has outfitted each light with RGBIC+W technology which grants you the full 16 million-colour spectrum. You can either set the colour of every light or use one of the 63 scene modes which highlights the depth of fun customization options.

Taller light pods pose a challenge

Just after my installation, I noticed that because of the new taller light dome, these lights do stick up from the ground a lot more than the previous version.

I could run a lawnmower over the original lights no problem without doing damage, but as soon as I set my Husqvarna Automower Robotic Lawnmower out to do its work I realized these lights were in danger. I opted to use a trowel to dig small divots for each light in order to push it further into the ground and make it flush with the grass. That seemed to do the trick.

Other Features

A string of Govee Ground Lights 2 lit up in blue and red.

Many features of the Govee Ground Lights 2 have a similar feature set to other Govee outdoor products. I have long been a huge fan of Govee lights because they are without exception easy to set up, easy to use, and easy to schedule and operate entirely problem free.

After several weeks in my yard I can see these new Ground Lights 2 are no exception.

Weatherproof Components

All components of the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2 have some degree of water and dust protection. Both the lights and control box have adequate IP67 ratings for dust and heavy rain protection while the adapter boasts a lighter splashproof IP44 rating. Just make sure you fully screw in the cable connecting the control box and lights to fully protect the wiring from water.

Pricing

All the new improvements of the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2 come with an increased price as well. The 15 pack costs $149 CAD / $99 USD while the 30 pack costs $249 CAD / $189 USD and that’s still without potential discounts and coupons. The older Govee Ground Lights can cost less especially when factoring the discounts which might make those lights tempting since they boast the same level of light customization, app compatibility, smart home support, and water protection.

Overall Thoughts: Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2

Govee Ground Lights 2 light shining green.

The improved brightness levels, longer wiring, and enhanced illumination make the Govee Outdoor Ground Lights 2 truly worthy of the “2” moniker.

Let’s cover the pros and the cons.

On the pro side these are super easy to install using the included stakes. They set up in a minute with the Govee app giving you full remote control and scheduling abilities so your lights can act automatically. They are extremely bright meaning they will be ideal for security applications, and the wider light cone helps a lot, and with the colour and scene options they are a really fun and beautiful addition to your yard decor. The longer length is nice, and since these install with removable steaks, you can easily relocate them or take them with you if you’re moving.

So what are the downsides? The biggest issue I found is that the taller design of each individual light pod may limit your placement especially if you don’t want to have to move them every time you cut your lawn. But the fix was pretty easy; just digging a small divot for each light pod.

In short, I love these lights and think they’re a cut above the original. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to you if you want to add more life and light to your yard.

Dealing with mosquitoes is a part of life for many of us, especially for those of us who like to rough it in the wild from time to time. During peak mosquito season, these little buzzers aren’t just annoying; they’re relentless and surprisingly good at finding the tiniest gap in your tent or screens. And while an itchy arm can ruin a camping experience, some mosquito bites come with real health concerns, thanks to the buffet of diseases these bugs can spread.

So,what are your options to both repel, defend and kill mosquitoes? I’ve  rounded up some of the gadgets I’ve already tested out for you, like repellers, zappers, larvae killing tablets, coils and more, plus some other options too.

Area repellents

Evicting mosquitoes from your tent or around your campfire can be tricky when they come in large swarms. Area repellants are nifty gadgets create a protective bubble around your space, keeping those pesky mosquitoes and other flying critters at bay. The beauty of area repellents lies in their ability to let you chill, dine, or play outdoors without slathering yourself in lotions or sprays.

Over the last couple summers I’ve had a chance to test out a few devices from Thermacell.

Let’s take a look at the options…

Thermacell Thermacell EX90 Outdoor Mosquito Repeller

Thermacell EX90 is a an adventure-ready spatial repellent device designed specifically for the great outdoors. It generates a 20-foot zone of advanced mosquito protection, which is the largest area repellent zone available in Thermacell’s product line.

The Thermacell EX90 works by using heat to vaporize a small amount of insecticide, effectively dispersing it into the air to create a mosquito-free zone around the device. While a lot of other brands and models operate similarly, the EX90’s ruggedness sets it apart.

Pros:

  • Portable and durable
  • Rechargeable
  • Creates a 20-foot zone of protection

Cons:

  • Requires refills
  • Not suitable for windy conditions

Handheld gadgets and wearables

Aside from walls and closed windows, there are no area repellents that can keep 100% of mosquitoes away. For these instances, you may want a solution that’s on you at all times. For this job, we’ve got handheld gadgets and wearables.

ZAP IT! Rechargeable Mosquito Zapper Racket

If you enjoy a hands-on approach to mosquito control and appreciate the eco-friendly aspect of a rechargeable device, then the Zap It Mosquito killing Racquet may just be the one for you.

Its design centers around convenience and functionality, featuring a portable electric mosquito swatter that allows users to zap pests anytime and anywhere. It’s shaped like a tennis racket with LED where strings ought to be.

Pros:

  • Rechargeable
  • Satisfaction of the zap
  • Safe

Cons:

  • Manual effort required
  • Build quality

Para’kito Mosquito Repellent Bundle

Para’kito Mosquito Bands are made of soft silicone and are infused with natural insect-repellent substances like citronella, eucalyptus oil, or even synthetic compounds that are meant to keep mosquitoes at bay.

The principle is straightforward – as you wear the band, it slowly releases the repellent into the air around you, creating a protective aura that’s supposed to keep mosquitoes from turning you into their next meal. The bands are passive, which means you just slap them on and go about your day, no spraying or rubbing required.

Pros:

  • Convenience
  • No need to rub chemicals on your skin
  • Child-friendly

Cons:

  • Frequent replacement
  • Limited protection area

Traps and zappers

While repellents can definitely help in reducing the mosquito flying around your immediate area, it doesn’t actually do much in terms of population control. This is where traps and zappers come in.

These devices work by attracting mosquitoes through heat, ultraviolet light, or carbon dioxide, then trapping or killing them upon contact. This can be a more effective method if you want to reduce the overall mosquito population over time by targeting female mosquitoes looking to lay eggs, though some designs prevent them from actually depositing eggs, capturing them instead.

EndBug Zapper

The EndBug Zapper is an electric mosquito control device that uses ultraviolet light to attract and eliminate mosquitoes, flies, and other insects. It has a durable, weather-resistant design that can be mounted on any outdoor wall or pole.

Pros:

  • Effective within up to a 1-acre range
  • Quick action
  • Includes a 5000LM LED lantern
  • Completely odorless

Cons:

  • Bees and butterflies might become collateral damage
  • Regular maintenance
  • Requires a power outlet

Xiaomi Mijia Mosquito Repellent

If you’re into tech, then you’ve probably already heard of Xiaomi. It’s a tech brand that builds smartphones and smart home devices. So, when they released a mosquito control device, there was no doubt that it was going to have a tech twist to it. Their Xiaomi Mijia Mosquito Repellent utilizes a small, replaceable mat infused with a mosquito-repelling chemical called metofluthrin. A silent fan within the device gently disperses the chemical, creating a mosquito-free zone without the need for heat or open flames.

Pros:

  • Non-Toxic & Silent
  • Smart Features
  • Discreet & Compact

Cons:

  • Limited Area of Effect
  • App Dependency
  • Mat Replacement

FAQs about mosquito control devices

Mosquito control devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The ideal mosquito control device for you hinges upon your particular requirements and personal preferences.

It is crucial to evaluate the efficacy, portability, cost, and environmental implications associated with any mosquito control device prior to making a purchase decision.

Are mosquito traps and zappers safe around kids and pets?

Safety first, right? Mosquito traps are generally very safe, as they don’t typically use chemicals or anything harmful. Instead, they lure mosquitoes with light, warmth, or CO2. Zappers do involve a bit of electricity, so you might want to place them out of reach of curious little hands and paws. As always, giving the instruction manual a read can prevent any uh-oh moments.

Is there a single mosquito repellent that really keeps all the mosquitoes away?

While there’s no silver bullet (or silver repellent, in this case), different types of repellents can be remarkably effective when used correctly. Each type has its strengths, whether it’s area repellents creating a no-fly zone, wearables guarding your personal space, or traps and zappers keeping the mosquito population in check. Mixing and matching might just be your best bet for an almost mosquito-free experience.

How often should I replace or refill my repellents?

It varies widely depending on the product. Area repellents like candles or diffusers might need a refill every few hours or so, while wearable devices or traps could last for weeks or even months. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations and keep an eye (or nose) out for any signs that it’s time for a change.

Are mosquito control devices safe for pets and children?

Most mosquito control devices are safe for pets and children, but it’s always best to read the manufacturer’s instructions and warnings before using any product.

How long does the protection of mosquito control devices last?

The duration of protection varies depending on the device and the type of repellent used. Some devices provide protection for just a few hours, while others can last up to a few months.

Can mosquito control devices eliminate all mosquitoes?

No, mosquito control devices cannot eliminate all mosquitoes. They can only repel or kill mosquitoes within a certain range or limit their breeding.

How do I know which mosquito control device is best for me?

It depends on several factors, such as the size of your outdoor space, the level of infestation, and your personal preferences.

But find out why this camera-feeder isn't a perfect solution.

Birdfy Hum Feeder

I’ll just say it; Hummingbirds are COOL. The amazing amounts of energy required to maintain this kind of airspeed is just awe-inspiring. But these little critters are notoriously hard to see and harder still to capture on photos or video… well, until now. Meet the Netvue Birdfy Hum Feeder. This nifty gadget is the world’s first dual-camera hummingbird feeder so you not only get a chance to pay your respects to the hummingbirds in the form of sweet sweet syrup, you also get the change to record those feedings too.

In this review I’ll show you what you’re getting with this hummingbird feeder, I’ll take a look into the special artificial intelligence or AI Bird identification that will help you differentiate among the hundreds of different kinds of hummingbirds—and if it really works.  I’ll show you the video quality, and then I’ll wrap things up with the pros and the cons and let you know if I think I can recommend this smart hummingbird feeder for you. Summary

Overall I love a lot of things about this feeder, but I think there are enough flaws and the price is high enough that I’m not ready to recommend it out of hand. I think if you know what you’re getting going in and what its shortcomings are and you’re willing to live with them, then you’ll probably really enjoy this feeder.

Pros

  • Smart design
  • Lots in the box
  • Solar panel included
  • Cleaning made easy
  • Big bottle
  • Weatherproof
  • Attracts lots of birds
  • Free cloud storage
  • Free AI identification

Cons

  • HD Video quality is just ok
  • Can leak after movement
  • No removeable battery
  • Solar panel doesn’t attach to feeder
  • Leaks if tilted
  • Expensive

What’s in the box?

Let’s take a look at what you get, since there’s a lot in here. Your main component is the feeder unit itself which consists of a base and 20 ounce liquid bottle.

The other main piece is a solar panel.

The other accessories are used for different types of mounting, and there’s a few extra pieces like rubber gaskets and stoppers as well as a cleaning brush.

Birdfy Hum Feeder

Unlike the Birdfy seed feeder, the Hum Feeder only offers one way for mounting the solar panel, and that’s to attach the  panel to a nearby hard surface with screws and a bracket. (The Birdfy feeder comes with a flexible rubberized arm that converts to a hook. Even so you can bend this arm and kind of hook it over something nearby, so it will work in a pinch.

To begin though, I just ran the camera off its battery.

Battery Life & Charging

Birdfy Hum Feeder

This feeder comes with a built-in 5,000 milliamp hour rechargeable battery. I will deduct a little point here only because you cannot remove the battery or the cameras and take them inside to charge; you’ve got to bring the whole feeder assembly in when it’s time to recharge. Now of course if you connect the included solar panel this will never be an issue.

**battery life

The Hum Feeder will operate in a temperature range of -10°C to 50°C (14°F to 122°F). If the temperature falls below this range, the cameras may not be able to boot up or record videos.

Build Quality: Not Your Average Bird-Feeder

The feeder is crafted with high-quality, durable materials that seem ready to brave the elements. Whether it’s scorching sun, drenching rain, or a surprise snow flurry, this feeder keeps its cool.

The feeder’s body is made from robust, clear BPA-free plastic – but not just any plastic, I’m glad to say. We’re talking about the high-grade, doesn’t-crack-or-yellow-after-two-weeks-in-the-sun kind. As for the feeding ports and perches, they’re made of the same sturdy BPA-free plastic except for its opaque glossy red finish.

The Birdfy Hum Feeder is engineered like it plans to host generations of hummingbirds. Its high-quality materials and well-thought-out design spell durability. But remember, just because it’s BPA-free and mold resistant doesn’t mean you can forget about cleaning it.

Speaking of well-thought-out design, there’s also an integrated ant moat at the top of the feeder’s body. This should prevent pesky ants from beating the hummingbirds to the nectar.

Set up and Installation

Birdfy Hum Feeder

First up, charge the feeder fully, even if you plan to use the solar panel. To assemble and set up the feeder, fill the bottle with hummingbird nectar. You can buy some but it’s just sugar and water so it’s way cheaper to make your own. The bottle comes with a leakproof valve cap that will also allow nectar to flow so just invert the bottle and screw it into the base. Attach one of the hanging hooks and place it where you want.

You’ll also need to sign up for or sign into the Birdfy app which is where you’ll get your videos and photos. Once your feeder is charged, you can follow the quick steps in the Birdfy app to link the feeder to your phone. I was ready to watch in under 5 minutes.

It took us several weeks to start attracting hummingbirds, so I can say you’ll need to be patient.

A Peep into the Double-Vision Cameras

The star of the show has to be Birdfy’s dual-camera system. The premise is, it’s like having a wildlife documentary being filmed right in your garden, and you’re the director. The dual angles ensure you capture two different angles in HD: one from the front and the other from the side.

Whether it’s the fascinating dynamics of hummingbird hierarchies or just a candid snapshot of their dazzling wings, these cameras don’t miss a beat.

Since we’re on the topic, let’s look closer at the video quality.

Birdfy Hum Feeder video quality

Birdfy Hum Feeder

I’ll start by saying the dual-angle capture is a great idea. Hummingbirds are fast and flighty and move quickly so having two cameras does help cover a wider angle.

Even so I was kind of disappointed with the video quality. The resolution just isn’t enough to get really good video or photos, and certainly not as good as the footage I got from the regular Birdfy bird feeder. From my hands-on experience, the photos and video are kind of blurry and the colour can be quite washed out. I tried the feeder in a handful of locations in my yard to try to get good light, and well the footage was generally OK, it’s definitely not high-quality. Definitely not as good as I was able to capture with my ipHone.

Cleaning and Maintenance

The BirdFy Hum Feeder does make up a lot of points for its great design.  It’s user-friendly and a cinch to clean and refill. It comes with two cleaning brushes – one for the nectar reservoir and another, much smaller one, for the artificial flowers where the birds draw the nectar from. As I noted before, there’s extra rubber gaskets and stoppers so you can replace those if needed.  The cameras can be wiped with a soft cloth to keep them clean and seeing clear. The overall design is nice to look at and sems to draw hummingbirds quite well.

Leaking feeder?

Speaking of cleaning and maintenance, I did notice that if you move the feeder around  a lot, it can sometimes leak. Birdfy actually addresses this on its website noting that you should try to keep the feeder level whenever possible. It wasn’t a huge problem, and did only happen when I relocated the feeder to other areas, so I think if I’m more careful with it in the future it won’t be an issue.

The Brainy Side: AI Bird ID Laying Down the Chirps

Birdfy Hum Feeder

The other thing I did quite like about Birdfy Hum Feeder is Birdfy’s AI Identify feature is like having a birdwatching expert in your pocket, always ready to help you put a name to your winged visitors. And it doesn’t cost extra like some other feeders.

What puts Birdfy Hum Feeder ahead of the curve, aside from its extensive 150-hummingbird database and AI, is that if you’re smarter than the average birdwatcher you can use images from both HD cameras to make a more accurate identification.  From what little I know about hummingbirds, the ID’s seem accurate.

As for the mobile app, it’s also quite powerful that lets you set up real-time notifications, take screenshots, and download footage directly to your phone.

With your purchase you get lifetime free cloud storage that will keep your videos and photos for up to 30 days. I think that huge and put this feeder leaps and bounds above some other competitors which want to charge you a monthly fee.

Overall review: Birdfy Hum Feeder

Birdfy Hum Feeder

Overall I have some mixed feelings about this feeder. Let’s go over the pros and the cons so we can see where it takes flight and where it may want to return to the nest. On the pro side the design is fantastic and what you get in the package is certainly worth it. The fact that it comes with a solar panel also is outstanding. I like how easy it is to assemble and take apart to clean, and that bird fee included two brushes to keep everything tidy. The 20 ounce nectar bottle holds enough for about 2 weeks of feedings, from my testing, but of course this depends how often you’re getting visitors. It’s IP66 water and dustproof and has a big operating range so it’s built tough. I also really love that you’re getting free cloud storage for 30 days and free AI bird identification too.

On the downside, the video quality is not the greatest. While I am mentioning this, I am not surprised by it whatsoever. Trying to capture high-speed bird movement with an HD camera is not ideal. I think if the company is able to come out with a 4K resolution camera with this feeder, it will completely change the results of what you’ll be able to see. Now with that said you can certainly see the hummingbirds that visit your feeder and it is possible for both humans and artificial intelligence to identify them for you… So with this in mind the feeder is definitely doing its job.

I also didn’t love the fact the whole feeder has to be brought inside to recharge if you are not using the solar panel, and I would like to see the solar panel be designed a little bit differently; I think it’s a missed opportunity that the solar panel will not attach directly to the feeder. It needs to be wall-mounted or hooked over something which can limit its placement. I think it would’ve been all too easy to simply create a screw port for the flexible mounting arm right on the feeder so that you could attach it.

The only other thing I will point out is that because of the design of the interior of the feeder, it may leak if the feeder is tilted or tipped while moving it. Birdfy says this is an expected side effect.

And in fact as a straight up hummingbird feeder I think it’s fantastic and I’m going to continue to use it. I feel that Birdfy’s next generation hum feeder will probably sore to great heights so my advice would be to wait for a newer model which I hope will have 4K cameras and a better design for the solar panel.

Birdfy Hum Feeder with Solar Panel sells for about $319USD You can get it from Birdfy’s website or from Amazon. Check out Birdfy’s seed feeder which I do think is one of the best out there… right here.

Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart grill

When cooking with fire, it’s too easy to go wrong, after all, you can’t tame fire… or can you? But the taste of grilled foods is like nothing else…What if you could take the flavour and fun of a traditional charcoal grill and make it easy to bring this type of cooking under your control. That’s the premise of the new Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart charcoal grill.

In this review I’m going to test one out for a few weeks at my home to see what it’s like to use, how easy it is to operate, if it truly can make charcoal grilling easier, and most importantly how the food turns out. I’ll wrap things up by going over the pros and cons and then I’ll let you know from my personal experience and hands-on review time, if I think I can recommend this smart charcoal grill to you.

A quick note here; Kamado Joe has generously gifted me with this product so that I can do an extended review at home. While the company has provided the product to me it has not had a hand in my creation of this review and has not told me what I have to say or what I can’t say about it so you can consider these thoughts my own.

Preparing for delivery

A word of advice about preparing for the delivery of your Kamado Joe Konnected Joe grill. It will likely be delivered on a large truck. The box is absolutely massive and weighs nearly 300 pounds according to the driver who dropped mine off. You’ll want to make sure you have a clear space for the delivery person to use a skid to maneuver it up to your house. There will be no moving the box itself once it’s delivered so make sure you can place it where you want it until you can unpack it.

The best thing to do is to open the box by removing the top lid and then lifting the sides of the carton off. Inside is the grill and many smaller boxes. Pull the boxes out and take them to where you’ll be assembling the grill. Open the grill up and take out the rest of the items that are stored inside including the heavy fire bricks. This will make moving the grill itself far easier. The last step will be to move the grill unit itself. You will absolutely need two people for this process or some kind of wheeled dolly. There are good handles on the side that allow you to grip it securely so you won’t feel like you’re going to drop it.

Watch my hands on video review of Kamado Joe Konnected Joe

Assembly

The assembly process was actually far easier and faster than I thought it would be. While I won’t go into excruciating detail about the exact steps; in a nutshell you put the legs onto a base, add the bottom shelf, then attach four caster wheels. The main Grilling unit then sits in the assembled base and gets secured with screws.

The last steps are to assemble the parts you need on the inside; there are several rather unique and perhaps indistinguishable parts. You’ll add:

  1. 5 AMP ceramic fire bricks; AMP stands for advanced multi panel.
  2. These fit together tongue-in-groove and shield the bottom of the unit from heat escaping.
  3. Next a stainless steel ring goes over the top of those bricks to hold them in place and to provide a base for the racks that will go in above.

On top of the stainless steel ring there is what’s called the “divide and conquer” flexible cooking rack. On top of the cooking rack you’ll place two halves of a circular ceramic heat deflector. This looks kind of like a pizza stone cut in two.

An accessory rack goes in next where you can securely place optional cooking tools or pots. Finally the “half moon cooking grates go in which is your top-most grilling surface. Because this is divided in two, you can remove one or both if necessary.

Automatic charcoal starting with heating element and fan

A couple of other really cool features to take note of; there is an automatic fire starting system (AFS) which uses a heating element and fan in the base of the grill to ignite the charcoal for you easily. The heating element is on when a red light on the front is glowing.

Once engaged this heating element will stay on for 10 minutes and the igniter will automatically turn off if the grill temperature goes above 190°F or 88°C. You can also press and hold the AFS button to turn the element off anytime you prefer.

Kamado Joe app gives you full remote control

Now that we’ve gotten to know a bit about our grill, let’s get it connected. For this you will need the free Kamado Joe app. Sign up for or sign into your account and when you’re ready plug in the grill. This will activate the Kontrol panel and allow you to get the grill connected to your smart phone.

With that said you can use the app to control your grill, or simply use the control board on the front if you prefer or you don’t have Wi-Fi.

Getting to know the Kontrol Board

Taking a quick look at the control panel, there’s two parts to it; on the right is the input for up to three meat probes. Below that is the AFS or Automatic Fire Starter button. On the main screen is really only a handful of buttons and a small screen. On the left you’ll see screen cycle at the top which allows you to cycle through different controller views.

How to set temperature on the grill

Below that is the temperature button which allows you to set the temperature; to use it press the button to initiate the temperature sequence then turn the knob to your desired temperature. Press the button again to set the temperature. Below that you’ll see the ‘set time’ button and at the bottom is the pairing button.

My Set up experience

Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart grill

When you use your grill for the first time it’ll open the Kamado Joe app and follow the instructions for pairing your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi grill with your smart device. When I did it I was connected in seconds.

Two ways to use Kamado Joe

One of the first questions I got as I began my review is whether or not you need to use the smart connectivity or whether you can simply use the grill as he would a traditional charcoal grill. The answer is, you can use it either way.

Using it with the companion app is known as Automatic Mode, while using it without any of the smarts is called Classic Mode. I’m going to focus first on using automatic mode since that’s what differentiates this grill.

How to start Kamado Joe Konnected Joe in Automatic Mode

To start your cook make sure any existing ash from the firebox has been cleaned out since this can prevent new charcoal from igniting.

Add your charcoal to the firebox and close the bottom vent fully. When running the grill in automatic mode the bottom vent should be closed completely at all times, which is unlike running a typical charcoal grill or even using this one in Classic mode. That’s because temperature sensors combined with the fan inside are going to be able to regulate the temperature for you.

Close the dome and power your grill on with the switch on the back. Then power on your controller. Choose what temperature you want to heat the grill to. Then press the AFS or automatic fire starter button to engage the element to ignite the charcoal. The element turns on and a red light will glow. This element will stay on for 10 minutes.

The heating element inside will light the charcoal for you, meaning one of the more finicky tasks of charcoal grilling has become completely automated.

In my personal experience with charcoal grilling, I have often struggled trying to get charcoal to start and then to burn properly. I also find it very fiddly to be opening and closing different vents at the top and the bottom and I will happily admit that I don’t really understand the whole airflow thing.

But with the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart charcoal grill, I don’t actually need to even play a part. The grill knows what it’s doing and can deliver a hot grill on demand. Let’s take a look at it in action.

Cooking on the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart charcoal grill: my experience

One of the first things I cooked on my Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart charcoal grill was a steak.

We built a fire in the bottom of the Joe to break it in. The coals lit very quickly with the electrical element which is also connected to that small fan. The fan cycles on and off as it needs to, to keep your charcoal at just the right temperature.

We took the grill up to about 600°F and also took the opportunity to do some foil wrapped potatoes. Husband Roger used the stone diffusers included in the kit to cut some of the heat under the potatoes so they would bake instead of scorching. I have to say these came out absolutely perfectly and cooked fairly quickly. When it came time to sear the steak, the grill was piping hot and I can say that our two steaks came out absolutely perfectly.

Burgers – using the probe

Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart grill burgers

On more than one occasion we used the Joe for grilling burgers, and I can stay without a doubt that these are the best burgers I’ve ever made on any grill or barbecue. Being able to precisely control the temperature, and deflect heat as maybe necessary means the burgers get perfectly cooked without turning into charcoalized hockey pucks.

Plus I got to experiment with using the temperature probes and I found that this can make a very easy grilling process even more error-proof, since your phone will alert you when your meat is cooked to the exact temperature or range you want, whether you like it rare or well done.

Because of the Kamado Joe,I’m getting more confident about grilling, so lettuce burgers are becoming a regular part of our rotation.

Pulled Pork

Next up husband Roger wanted to try out a pulled pork. This kind of all day grilling can be quite challenging because you need to manage the fire and the temperature throughout the day, and possibly add charcoal at some point. Using the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart charcoal grill for this couldn’t have been easier.

The grill got up to temperature fairly quickly and then stayed parked there. There was no fiddling or adjusting or constant checking. The best part was that the app kept me up-to-date about exactly what was happening on the grill. So much so, and so confident was I by this time that I felt comfortable going out on a long bike ride knowing I could keep one eye on the app and my cook from afar.

The pork roast we made was tender, smoky and succulent.

Beef ribs

Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart grill ribs

Next up we tried another multi hour cook, this time with beef ribs. We put them on early in the morning thinking they would take close to all day. By the time we checked on them at midday we were surprised to find they were perfect; this put the cook time on the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe at least a few hours faster than using our old charcoal grill. The ribs were tender and tasty, with a nice bark on the outside.

Making pizza

We also used the Kamado Joe to make pizza. I will note there is a special pizza platform called the DoughJoe (haha) that turns your grill into a de facto pizza oven. I didn’t have that, but would certainly consider getting one. We got the grill up to temperature, assembled the pie, and had fully cooked fresh homemade pizza in under half an hour. Impressive.

Kamado Joe creates confidence

Charcoal grilling is an art. It takes practice and knowledge to cook well on a charcoal grill, and more so if you’re going to tackle longer all day cooks. For that reason I’ve always preferred to simply use a gas grill, but well gas grills can be quick and convenient, they can also dry out and scorch food a lot easier. Plus you just don’t get that beautiful smoky charcoal grilled taste when using a gas grill.

After spending about six weeks with the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe, I can say one of the best things about it is that it has made me a far more confident charcoal griller. I am no longer preoccupied with vents, airflow, and trying to fine-tune fire. I let Joe handle the intricacies of the fire and I get to watch via the app. It couldn’t be easier to master charcoal cooking.

Overall Review: Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart charcoal grill

Overall I have to say I’ve been blown away by how easy this grill makes cooking with charcoal.

Let’s go over the pros and cons so you can use my personal experience to make your own decision.

On the pro side, the grill is well built and feels substantial; like something I’ll own for life. It was incredibly easy to assemble, and the set up process was quick and smooth. The package comes with everything you could possibly need to grill effectively, and overall it’s just very intuitive.

Using the Konnected Joe makes cooking any kind of food virtually foolproof. I had amazing success cooking everything from burgers and steaks, to pulled pork, roast chicken and ribs. Even pizza got elevated thanks to this grill. I found it was incredibly hard to overcook or burn anything when following the app and letting the connected smarts manage the food for me. I think I said it before but I’ll say it again; I’m super impressed with how user-friendly this grill is and how much confidence it’s given me to cook with charcoal.

On the downside, it’s truly hard to find a lot of things I didn’t like. If you are new to charcoal grilling you might find the large size and extraordinarily heavy weight of this grill to be more than you want to manage. With that said this style, design, and size is all in line with similar ceramic or egg-shaped charcoal grills of this ilk. Other folks may not appreciate the fact it requires assembly, but I can attest that it was extremely simple to do. You will need two people for the last couple of assembly steps so plan ahead.

What are you want to cook with the help of technology using the app, or freestyle it on your own, this grill can accommodate both type of cook.

I can absolutely recommend the Kamado Joe Konnected Joe smart charcoal grill to you.

It sells for about $1699USD and you can get it from places like Home Depot, Best Buy and even Amazon in the US.

Himiway Bike Big Dog

With more cities in the US, Canada, and other parts of the world building more bike lanes, e-bikes are becoming a more viable option for beating the traffic, and reducing carbon emissions, or just getting outdoors. I’m relatively new to e-bikes but I’ve been really enjoying the experience and learning about new brands. I recently received a test sample of the Himiway Big Dog E-bike to try out and see what the experience is like. In this review I’ll show you what it’s like to assemble and ride, and what makes this fat tire cargo bike unique and different. I’ll go over the pros and cons and then I’ll let you know if I think I can recommend the e-bike to you.

A quick note that while Himiway provided this sample to me at no charge, it did not make any requests about the content of my review so these thoughts are 100% my own. Read on to see how to get $50 off your purchase.

What is Himiway Big Dog E-bike?

Himiway Big Dog Cargo ebike reviewHimiway named this particular e-bike “Big Dog” to describe its primary function as a utility or cargo bike and it has the looks to play that part. The bike’s aerospace grade aluminum frame is twice as thick as other commuter bikes allowing the bike to carry as much as 400 pounds worth of payload. If that figure sounds familiar, it’s the actually the same payload as the Himiway D5 Zebra I reviewed last August.

But the devil is in the details as the overall design of the Himiway Big Dog differs from your average all-terrain bike. The Big Dog has almost a moped form factor with a low center of gravity supported by chubby 20-inch alloy wheels. This combination makes the e-bike feel more comfortable to ride even if you fully load it.

Set Up & Assembly

A word of warning when the bike is delivered that it comes in an extremely big box and is extraordinarily heavy. The bike alone weighs 79 pounds so you might need assistance to get it somewhere or you can unbox it.

I assembled an e-bike last year and it wasn’t hard, but since it was extremely unfamiliar to me it did take me a while. We couldn’t wait to get this bike on the road so husband Roger assembled it pretty much the moment it arrived. It took him about 45 minutes to attach the handlebars, wheels, pedals, and a few accessories.

Himiway Big Dog Cargo ebike reviewThe bike does come with all the tools you need to do the assembly which is massively helpful. It also boasts a few extras like a bell. An AC-powered transformer and power cable are also included for recharging.

Battery & Range

Himiway Bike Big Dog

The Himiway Big Dog E-bike uses the same 960Wh Samsung or LG 48V 20Ah lithium-ion battery as other Himiway all-terrain bikes like the Zebra. On a full charge the bike can last up to about 60-90 miles, or 96-144 kilometers. Like other Himiway bikes, you can easily swap or replace the battery by unlocking the bay with the included key and sliding it out.

You can charge the battery either on or off the bike.

How long does recharging take?

Charging a fully drained Big Dog takes about 7 hours. Wow that does seem infinitely long, the truth is that this is a massive battery; far larger than your average power bank, so it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that it will take a while. The best thing to do is to charge it overnight if you don’t want to deal with downtime.
Himiway claims that its battery can retain about 80% of its capacity after 1,000 charges.

Display & controls

Mounted in the middle of the handlebar is a good sized display screen. The multifunctional display offers all the essential data when riding including the average speed, mileage, and battery level.

On the left handlebar is the power and speed switch box which will get your bike turned on and allow you to dial up the pedal assist.Himiway Big Dog Cargo ebike review
A headlight on-off switch and information button is also located here. A Shimano shift lever is located on the right hand side of the handle next to the throttle which operates by turning it towards you.

One other thing I really appreciate is the fact that an LED headlight and LED tail light are also included on the bike and can simply be activated with the push of a button.

Riding experience: Power on & go

I took the Big Dog our on several rides, and husband Roger also tested it out. While I did find it a bit strange to get used to the different dynamics of the smaller and fatter wheels, I got over it quickly. The bike feels very stable and supportive and the ride is extremely smooth—despite the bike’s weight.

Himiway Big Dog Cargo ebike reviewAdjustable shock absorbers on the front allow you to make adjustments for street riding or going off road.
The bike is surprisingly comfortable to ride even for long distances; one of the first times we took the bike out to test it, we ended up on a three hour crosstown bike ride without realizing it.

The other way this bike is great is for keeping you stable when you hit grass, or dirt; those chunky tires dig in and keep you from skidding.

Carrying Cargo

You’ve got several options for carrying cargo with this bike. The rear rack is placed low down above the wheel so you could simply bundle soft bags onto here and secure them with bungee cords. You could also add some thing like a box or saddlebags or panniers and transport whatever you need to that way.

We opted to give the big dog that European chic feel by bolting a wine box onto the back.

Now it can carry groceries, a backpack or case of beer easily.

Speed & Power: 7-speed Drivetrain

Himiway outfitted the Big Dog with a 750W brushless geared hub motor. At full throttle, the Big Dog, can reach a top speed of 25 mph as delivered which makes it a bit slower than the Juiced CrossCurrent X Step-Through, but still on par with other Himiway bikes. When Roger and I tested it out, we couldn’t get it much faster than about 20 mph even when unloaded. Himiway says that’s because customers who want to unlock more speed must first agree to a safety disclosure to receive a code to unlock higher speed.

Himiway Big Dog Cargo ebike reviewThe 7-speed drivetrain does give you some peddling flexibility but be prepared for a workout especially when you fully load its already heavy frame. Speaking of weight, if you plan on storing the Big Dog on a bike rack, make sure it can handle at least 90 pounds to support its 88.6-pound body.

Interestingly this bike also has something called walk mode which will give you very low power assistance when you’re walking the bike long distances or up small hills. Just press and hold the minus button on the left side keypad to slowly power the bike forward at walking speed.

Power assist, pedaling, or full throttle

Like many e-bikes you have options for how you want to power it; you can of course simply pedal the bike and get where you’re going, though as noted above because this bike is so heavy it is indeed quite a work out.

A good thing then that you can engage the adjustable pedal assist which will make peddling much easier. You can dial this power assistance up or down depending on how much of a boost you need. If you want to extend the bike’s range beyond 60 miles, the pedal-assist system will give you a nifty 15% range boost.

Like operating a motorcycle, the Himiway Big Dog offers a half-twist throttle which is great at quickly and effortlessly launching the bike forward while at the same time, offering a layer of protection against accidental activations.

Although Himiway advertises the Big Dog as a city cargo bike, the 20-inch x 4-inch Kendo fat tires help the big dog adapt to tougher terrain and weather conditions while providing good shock absorption as well.

Mechanical Disc Brakes & Kickstand

Himiway Bike Big Dog

The Big Dog also features the same Tektro 180mm mechanical brakes as the Zebra on both wheels. After a little bit of calibrating, I had no problems with these brakes on the Zebra. However, loading the Big Dog with cargo can affect the stopping distance.

When parking the Big Dog, you can use the heavy-duty U-shaped aluminum kickstand since its double-leg design helps with the stability which comes in handy when loading and unloading, or doing repairs or replacing the battery.

Exclusive Accessories

The Himiway Big Dog is built like a tank just like the Zebra, but if you want to maximize its rugged frame, you can equip the bike with an accessory or two.
Himiway sells a special front-mounted basket as well as an extended large rear rack for those larger loads. You can also attach the bike to a foldable cargo trailer sold on Himiway’s website. Finally, the Himiway Cobra Rear Rack initially made for the Himiway D7 Cobra and D7 Cobra Pro is compatible with the Big Dog as well.

Security

Himiway Big Dog Cargo ebike reviewIn this day and age it’s important to have good security features. The big dog gives you the ability to create a security pass code which is required to power up and ride the bike. You can set your own pass code by following the instructions in the manual. Even so, someone would still be able to pedal the bike away if they were determined. I would also like to see something like a hidden AirTag compartment either in the battery or the frame…or both, so that it could be tracked if stolen.

Weather resistance

Naturally one hopes a e-bike is weather resistant, and the Big Dog does have IPX4 water resistance. Still, Himiway recommends you not park your bike outdoors in cold or inclement weather for extended periods of time.

Overall Review: Himiway Big Dog E-bike

Not all e-bikes including some all-terrain ones are made specifically for cargo, deliveries or just those that need to carry stuff on two wheels. Himiway did a good job filling in that niche because the Himiway Big Dog is a fun e-bike for transporting stuff or just tooling around in, and it has some off-road chops too!

Himiway Big Dog Cargo ebike reviewSoup it up with a rack accessory and you have an e-bike that can really stack up the load while having a big enough battery for long distances. The Big Dog’s cargo-focused role does mean that Himiway had to compromise a bit on its all-terrain performance so be sure you really need the cargo features before finalizing your purchase.

Overall I think this is a great e-bike and extremely well made. I love the versatility of the Cargo focussed design; I think the fact the cargo rack is placed lower down behind the seat and over top of chubby tires gives it so much more stability for whatever you need to carry. I think this would be a really great e-bike for someone who needs to navigate a densely populated urban centre while carrying the essentials. while the bike does weigh a lot, it actually gives me a lot of confidence that if I ever did face a crash, the bike would survive, and so would I.

When it comes to the downside for this bike, there’s not a lot that truly stands out to me. I do think the heavy weight, while necessary to its core purpose, is a lot of bike to manage, and if you were to try to transport this on a vehicle, just lifting it up would be a huge challenge for one person. Plus, you’re going to have difficulty finding a vehicle rack that can accept its weight. If you’re interested in the Himiway brand, you can also take a look at the Himiway Zebra, which is slimmer and lighter.

The other thing I would like to see on this bike is some better anti-theft options like a hidden AirTag compartment.

Those are less distractions from the bike itself and more just observations and future considerations.

I and Roger have been loving the Himiway Big Dog and I can absolutely recommend it.
